In 1999, Club member Boro Boros arranged the first ever Croatia Hamilton Golf Classic. It started small - some members of the soccer team and a few friends got together at a local course to shoot some balls around.
There was even a rule in place: "Whether you bring a friend or not, you pay for two!" This was to try and get more people involved, and also so that the tournament would be a profitable fundraiser for Hamilton Croatia.
The annual scramble format tournament has grown a lot since then. It's been held at top-notch golf facilities across Southern Ontario and has averaged a field of over 140 golfers over the past seven years.
In a scramble, each player tees off on each hole. The best of the tee shots is selected and all players play their second shots from that spot. The best of the second shots is determined, then all play their third shots from that spot, and so on until the ball is holed.
The tournament includes 18 holes of golf with a cart, a catered lunch -- spit-roasted lamb and/or pig -- and prizes for all participants, including extra rewards for closest to the pin and the longest drive. Photos, "specialty" holes, a putting contest, and the champions trophy presentation are all things that have been worked into the day to make the HCGC an annual can't miss golf experience.
From the most avid to the most amateur golfer, each year our tournament continues to impress!
Your day will include a scramble round with cart, a putting contest, specialty holes which include a photo (among other things) taken by our "golf tourney girls", a catered buffet lunch -- roasted lamb and/or pig will definitely be featured -- and great prizes for all participants, including closest to the pin and longest drive prizes.
A shot-gun start tee-off is set for 8 a.m. to ensure most of the field finishes at roughly the same time. This allows for the lunch, drinks, trophy presentation, and prize allocation followed at The Centre, 166 Green Mountain Road to start in a timely fashion ... Cost for the entire day is $150 per golfer. Payments must be made by Sunday, September 1st - one week before the tournament.
Course
King's Forest Golf Course
The HCGC returned to King's Forest Golf Club in Hamilton after a one-year stint at Mystic Golf Club in 2010. The location and difficulty of the course are two major reasons we keep coming back!
King's Forest measures 7,150 yards, par-72 from the tips with a rolling layout that features some terrific elevated tee shots, lots of challenging doglegs and six holes that cross the Red Hill Creek.
The addition of irrigation ponds and significant improvements to the Red Hill Creek, which winds its way through the property, in 2009 have only added to the challenge.
