A Letter from LizAMANDA MOORE/STAFF PHOTO — Frankie and Aaron Adzijevich toss around one of several used soccer balls Aaron collected to send to Haiti. Aaron, eight, was gathering used soccer gear since May for GOALS for Haiti, an organization which promotes community engagement and education through sport.
Liz Adzijevich — This past summer, Aaron and the rest of us (his family) asked our friends, family and strangers to help us gather gently used items to send soccer equipment and uniforms to Haiti. We found out that many of the children there love to play soccer and often do so with homemade balls and no shoes.
We started off at our school — Our Lady of Fatima in Grimsby — and collected five boxes of items. We moved on to our soccer club Hamilton Croatia and got another overwhelming response. Family and friends also kept bringing things to our home and our garage got fuller and fuller.
We realized at some point that it would cost quite a bit of money to ship all these items to Haiti so we organized a garage sale to help raise funds for the shipping costs. Many generous people donated items for us to sell.
Friends and family supported our efforts by giving us items or money to support the cause. Some even came to help out at the garage sale. Our local paper printed a story about Aaron’s efforts and asked the community to support him. Along with friends and family, total strangers arrived at the garage sale donating money to help ship the items to Haiti. In total we raised $832 towards shipping costs.
When we were organizing the items, a friend told us about a missionary he knows and wondered if we should speak to him. He came to our home and offered to take the items to Haiti in his next shipment which would allow the items to be sent for free! He goes to Haiti several times a year to do missionary work along with building much needed schools. We asked if we could donate the $832 towards building the schools.
All in all, we gathered:
200+ SOCCER SHIRTS
67 SOCCER BALLS
8 SOCCER NETS
103 SHORTS
85 PAIRS OF SOCKS
AND
65 PAIRS OF CLEATS
We wanted to thank everyone that helped out as it was an amazing group effort. Many kids in Haiti will be able to play soccer thanks to all of you.
With Sincere thanks,
Aaron, Frankie, Stipa and Liz Adzijevich
